New arbitrator appointed in the arbitral proceedings instituted by Ukraine against the Russian Federation

On 28 October 2024, the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Judge Tomas Heidar, appointed Ms Kathy-Ann Brown (Jamaica) as arbitrator in the arbitral proceedings instituted by Ukraine against the Russian Federation under Annex VII to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (PCA Case No. 2019-28, Dispute Concerning the Detention of Ukrainian Naval Vessels and Servicemen (Ukraine v. the Russian Federation)).


IMO Secretary-General visits the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

President Tomas Heidar welcomed Mr Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to the Tribunal today. During the visit, Mr Dominguez signed the guest book of the Tribunal, met with the Judges and was given a tour of the premises.

Tribunal delivers unanimous Advisory Opinion in Case No. 31

Today, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea delivered its Advisory Opinion on the Request submitted to the Tribunal by the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law. The Advisory Opinion was read by Judge Albert Hoffmann, who presided over the case.
