Order in The M/T ”San Padre Pio” (No. 2) Case (Switzerland/Nigeria)

By Order of 5 January 2021, the President of the Tribunal, Judge Albert Hoffmann, has extended the time-limit for the submission of the Counter-Memorial of Nigeria to 6 April 2021.


Dispute concerning delimitation of the maritime boundary between Mauritius and Maldives in the Indian Ocean

Special Chamber finds that it has jurisdiction to adjudicate upon the dispute concerning the delimitation of the maritime boundary and that Mauritius' claim in this regard is admissible.

By Order of 3 February 2021, the President of the Special Chamber fixed the following time-limits for the filing of the Memorial and Counter­-Memorial:

25 May 2021 for the Memorial of Mauritius; and

25 November 2021 for the Counter-Memorial of the Maldives.

On 25 March 2021, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea amended its Rules with a view to rendering them gender inclusive.


ITLOS-Nippon Foundation Capacity-Building and Training Programme

The deadline for submissions has been extended to 30 April 2021!

The Tribunal is pleased to announce the launch of its 2021-2022 capacity-building and training programme on dispute settlement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is organized with the support of the Nippon Foundation. The programme is aimed at junior to mid-level government officials and researchers who are currently working on issues related to the law of the sea, maritime law or dispute settlement.

The 15th edition of the programme is scheduled to start on 19 July 2021 and end on 31 March 2022. The new application deadline is 30 April 2021.

Order in The M/T ”San Padre Pio” (No. 2) Case (Switzerland/Nigeria)

Having ascertained the views of the Parties, the President of the Tribunal, Judge Albert Hoffmann, has fixed the date for the opening of the oral proceedings as 9 September 2021 by Order of 18 June 2021.


President Hoffmann's Statement at the 31st Meeting of States Parties

On 21 June 2021, the statement of Judge Albert Hoffmann, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, was presented to the 31st Meeting of States Parties to the Convention.

The President, having regard to the special circumstances of the case and having sought the views of the Parties, decides to postpone the opening of the oral proceedings until a later date to be fixed after consultations with the Parties.

25th anniversary

The Tribunal celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary today at its premises in Hamburg.


Junior Professional Officer Programme

On 30 September 2021, the Tribunal established a Junior Professional Officer programme for young professionals to serve in the Legal Office of the Tribunal’s Registry, or in other departments of the Registry, as necessary.


President Hoffmann addresses the General Assembly

President Hoffmann addressed the General Assembly on Thursday, highlighting that the Tribunal has the ability and willingness to retain its leading role in ensuring the harmonious application of the Convention.


Order in the Dispute concerning delimitation of the maritime boundary between Mauritius and Maldives in the Indian Ocean

The Order of the President of the Special Chamber, fixing the time-limits for the filing of the Reply and the Rejoinder, is now available.


M/T “San Padre Pio” (No. 2) Case removed from the Tribunal’s list of cases

On 29 December 2021, by Order of the President of the Tribunal, Judge Albert Hoffmann, the M/T “San Padre Pio” (No. 2) Case was removed from the Tribunal’s list of cases.

In accordance with article 105 of the Rules of the Tribunal, the Order places on record the discontinuance, by agreement of the Parties, of the proceedings initiated by Switzerland and Nigeria on 17 December 2019, and orders that the case be removed from the Tribunal’s list of cases.
